Hispanic Heritage Month 2007

Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, Facts for Features
In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week including Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15). America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

Are Retail Clinics Replacing Physicians?

By: J. Scott Nystrom, M.D., Medical Director, September 2007
Twelve percent of retail clinic patients agreed with the statement “retail clinics have mostly or completely replaced my primary care physician for the type of treatments offered at retail clinics,” according to a new study by Market Strategies Inc. (MSI). In addition, consumers (patients) who have used retail clinics are open to treatment for a wider range of “non-cold” type medical treatments, such as migraines, high cholesterol, and hypertension. Lastly, 30% of all consumers believe that retail clinics should compete with PCPs by offering a broader variety of more complex care and diagnostic services. Even doctors have joined in. “Greater Baltimore Medical Center agreed to allow its physicians to act as off-site medical directors of four Target Store walk-in health care clinics.”

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER NEWS

Latino Health: California's Challenge - by Robert A. Beltran, MD, MBA

Although many improvements in the health of Americans have taken place in recent years, substantial differences still exist between racial and ethnic groups with regard to health status, health insurance and access to care. Such compelling evidence of this exists that in 1998 President Clinton put forth an initiative, “Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health.” The goal of this initiative is to eliminate disparities in infant mortality, cancer screening and management, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV infections/AIDS and immunizations by the year 2010.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The Halloween Mardi Gras.

Greetings:  It is with pride and excitement that you are being invited to join Promesa as we celebrate our annual fundraiser “The Halloween Mardi Gras”.  This special event will to be held on October 30, 2007 at 7 PM and will take place at “B.B.King’s, 237 West 42nd Street, in the Times Square section of Manhattan, New York.

Promesa has taken a more non traditional approach to the design of its premier fundraising event in the recent past by assigning a special theme to each year’s banquet. This year’s Halloween and Mardi Gras combination theme should prove not only to be a successful fund raising event but a most enjoyable one as well. We believe we have found a way for individuals and corporations to contribute to our organization and have an enjoyable evening at the same time. We hope that if you’ve attended our special event in the past, you enjoyed it and will come back or that if you have never been to one of our events, you’ll join us and remember an event that was both enjoyable and purposeful.

A major portion of the funds collected this year will be spearheaded towards creating a scholarship fund for students whose parents are working but still need assistance in meeting the cost of child care. In addition, some of the proceeds will go towards the daycare center’s playground fund and to fund other program enhancements throughout the year. As a special offer this year, Promesa will name the new day care facility after the person or organization who contributes $100,000 or more at this year’s fund raiser.

We appreciate your support and commitment to the vision of Promesa and the its desire to serve New York City and its communities and truly hope that you will join us at this memorable occasion. If you have any questions, or need additional information regarding this event, please contact Yolanda Santiago,Director of Staff & Fund Developmen,Promesa at 718-299-1100, ext. 3067 (email: ysantiago@promesa.org).
