JUNE 2007 ISSUE

AHHE and NHCCH Local and Regional News

Nilda I. Soto, MS, Ed, Vice President of the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (AHHE), and Assistant Dean, Office of Diversity Enhancement at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, was recently appointed by New York State Governor, Eliot Spitzer, to a three year term ending March, 2010 on the New York State Minority Health Council.  The New York State Department of Health, Minority Health Council was created by Statute (PHL 243) in 1992.  As stated, the purpose of the Council is "to consider any matter relating to the preservation and improvement of minority health and advise the Commissioner thereon; and, it may from time to time, submit to the Commissioner any recommendations relating to the preservation and improvement of minority health."

The Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (AHHE) has been asked to submit a full proposal to the New York State Health Foundation for a grant to "Enhance Hispanic Enrollment in Public Insurance." Low-wage Hispanic workers who are eligible, but not yet enrolled in public insurance are difficult to reach. Including migrant workers, those with multiple part-time jobs, such as in the restaurant and construction industries, and staff of small employers not offering health insurance. This employed but often uninsured  audience mistakenly believes that they and their families are not eligible for public insurance. Because of language or cultural barriers, they may be unable to navigate the application process. Many are fearful that applying for public insurance could adversely affect their immigration status. The proposal which we will submit will address these issues.

At the June General Membership Meeting of AHHE and the NHCCH in New York, an Electronic Records Committee was established. NYC Council Member Gale Brewer, who served as keynote speaker at the meeting and Chairs the Government in Technology Committee of the Council, welcomed their advice in this growing area. Committee members include Diana K, Santos, Senior Associate Director, Inpatient Revenue at Bellevue Hospital Center/South Manhattan Healthcare Network, Raymond Esteves, RN, Assistant Vice President Clinical Services/Department of Psychiatry at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and Dr. Michele B. Anderson, RN, MS., President, Aro Community Services, Inc. If you would like to join the committee, please contact Ms. Santos at: diana.santos@bellevue.nychhc.org
