Unemployment Data Is Grim In All Areas except Medical Field

The Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics released its grim jobs report late last week, reporting that 524,000 jobs were lost in December, bringing the 2008 total to 2.6 million and pushing the nation's unemployment rate to 7.2 percent, or approximately 111 thousand American residents are unemployed, the biggest since 1993. December's unemployment data was led by layoffs in manufacturing, construction and employment services, while health care added 32,000 jobs. Average hourly earnings rose by 5 cents, or 0.3 percent, over the month.

In the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has increased by 3.6 million with most of the increase occurring in the last 3 months. Unemployment rates increased for adult men (7.2 percent), adult women (5.9 percent), whites (6.6 percent), blacks (11.9 percent), and Hispanics (9.2 percent). Teenagers were also affected with unemployment figures reaching 20.8 percent of which 22.6 percent was for Hispanic teenagers.

Bright Spot
Only healthcare careers were the bright spot in 2008, gaining a total of 372,000 jobs. This area added 32,000 jobs in December alone, including jobs in ambulatory services (14,000) and hospitals (12,000).

The Labor Department's monthly jobs report is based on data collected from 60,000 households to determine the unemployment picture for the entire workforce, which consists of about 154 million Americans. The households surveyed are changed each month. The number used is a statistically representative sampling that provides a 95 percent confidence level and has a 3 percent margin of error. Questions asked do not include "Are you employed?" but rather a set of cross-referenced questions that include: Did you earn an incoming working this past month?; Did you work full-time or part-time?; If not employed, are you looking for full-time or part-time work?; etc.

"A sample is not a total count and the survey may not produce the same results that would be obtained from interviewing the entire population," reads the Labor Department's Web site. "But the chances are 90 out of 100 that the monthly estimate of unemployment from the sample is within about 230,000 of the figure obtainable from a total census."

"Since monthly unemployment totals have ranged between about 5 and 8 million in recent years, the possible error resulting from sampling is not large enough to distort the total unemployment picture," the site reads. - LJ

Region V chamber leaders and members chamber members. As those of you who have previouslyattended this important annual event know, its goal is to offer your organization and your membership a forum fromwhich to offer input on the many issues thatnow orin the futuremay have an impact onthe well being of small businesses in general and Hispanic owned businesses in particular.

There are currently a number of legislative proposals pending in Congress that may very well have a negative and onerous effect on each and every one of your members' businesses, small OR large. Accordingly, Istrongly suggest thatyou to go the USHCC web site at www.ushcc.com to learn moreabout these issues, to bring them to the attention of your constituents and, mostimportantly, toencourage your members to register as soon as possibleto assure your chamber's "place at the table". I have no doubt that you, as the leader of your chamber, know how important it is to keep abreast of federal legislation that directly or indirectly impacts your members' bottom lines.Given the current economic climate,it is now, more than ever, important that Hispanic businesses prioritize the brick and mortar routines of daily business life that will sustaintheir enterprises into the future. However, whileHispanic businessesmust stay focused on sales, efficiencies, finances, etc.,it is equallyimportant that theybe keptinformed by their advocates on the initiatives of our elected officials at the highest levels of government whose decisions play major roles in the fortunes of their companies and, indeed, of their families.

Brief ELPH-Emerging Leaders in Public Health- information

The Emerging Leaders in Public Health (ELPH) program prepares the next generation of committed public health leaders to manage and lead in times of uncertainty. This program prepares these leaders to expand their influence in their organizations and within their communities. The ELPH program is custom designed for public health (and related) professionals who want to improve their leadership skills for improved planning and decision-making and want to increase their professional network ELPH has embraced the idea that issues of racial and ethnic health disparities in the US can not be addressed without bringing key minority participants and others to the table for the decision-making process. In many instances, the community needs to identify with the leadership making these decisions to strengthen the outreach capability of America's health system.

The program website is: http://www.publichealthleaders.org/index.htm and the deadline is March 31, 2009. The 3 on-sites are scheduled for June 8-11, 2009, October 11-13, 2009 and February 24-26, 2010.

There is a tuition associated with the program. Tuition costs include instruction by nationally recognized faculty, leadership and learning materials, and on-site retreat accommodations and meals at a state-of-the-art conference facility.

The application requires:

  • Basic information (school, job title, degrees, etc.)
  • The name and contact information for a recommender
  • A personal statement from you
  • Recent resume
