| Job Description |
An unusually promising opportunity has arisen to join one of the most successful healthcare systems in the country as Chief Operating Officer of a system-sponsored physician group. Providence Health Care (PHC), an Eastern Washington service area of Seattle-headquartered Providence Health and Services (PH&S) based in Spokane, is seeking candidates for the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Providence Physician Services (PPS), a 50+ sponsored physician group, with plans for significant future expansion.. This executive will lead the growth of systems and infrastructure as PPS grows and evolves in the coming years. Your confidential recommendation of a colleague who is interested/qualified is welcome.
Spokane, WA, a highly livable community from economic, lifestyle, and recreational standpoints, has health care resources to match and exceed that found in larger cities. PHC includes two tertiary care facilities, 272-bed Holy Family and 623-bed Sacred Heart Medical Centers. Along with a number of other successful health initiatives, PHC has taken the lead in sponsoring an IT system which allows access region-wide to all medical records for all patients, an unprecedented achievement. The region is marked with a minimum of competition, either from physicians or from for-profits, and by a high collaboration index. The terrain has recently changed in that a for-profit system is entering the market, which has spurred PHC to pursue more formalized physician alignments.
PPS has existed as a successful vehicle to promote physician recruitment and retention for some years. At present, 50+ physician practices are managed under a confederation model, with MSO services, predominantly back office, offered to 230 additional physicians. The plan is to build on the existing business management template, and expand and evolve PPS to a physician-led, system-affiliated and sponsored multispecialty group practice.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive of PPS, the COO will be charged with the implementation of business plans and strategies to reach expansion goals, devising infrastructure, management, and practice policy, and interfacing with PHC and PH&S as regional physician group practice operations lead.
Candidates will need significant experience in group practice operations, with a premium put on time spent in an integrated delivery system. Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of health care in a setting inclusive of a complex tertiary center and other (multispecialty) group practices is highly desirable. Strong management skills are required, as are a thorough working knowledge of IT systems and other infrastructure aspects of large group practice. Effective communication and interpersonal skills will be essential in a dynamic and evolving market.
